What is domestic abuse?
Domestic abuse is an incident or a pattern of behaviour that is used by someone to control or obtain power over another. They may currently, or were previously, in a relationship with them, or they may be a family member.
The abuse can be physical, sexual, psychological, financial, or emotional.
How to spot it
- They are jealous and possessive
- They tell you what to wear and where you can go
- They embarrass or humiliate you in front of others
- They use anger and intimidation to frighten you
- They tell you that you’re to blame for their behaviour
- They stop you seeing friends or family
- They track your movements

What is financial abuse?
Financial abuse (also known as economic abuse) is when someone takes control over another adult’s finances.
This doesn’t only have to be from a partner, but could be a family member, friend, carer, or a trusted third party like power of attorney.
How to spot it
- You’re not allowed to work
- They borrow money in your name
- They cash your pension or salary without your permission
- They get their name added to your accounts
- They spend your money without telling you
- You’re stopped from accessing money
- You’re asked to update your will
